Camera dilemma

We left England in January 2004 with our current digital camera which has served us admirably for nearly two years. It was a massive step up after using 35mm film in Australia and enabled us to take lots of photo’s, lots of which are on this site.
For our adventures throughout the South of Asia we want to upgrade from out current 2 mega pixel camera. We have been on the lookout for a while and singled out the EOS350D, Canon’s entry level digital SLR (that’s a real camera with inter-changeable lenses). This model has now been replaced by the EOS400D which is even more impressive… but unfortunately we have had to reign in our spending impulses.
We are now looking at the compact section of the market. I think we have picked out a likely candidate in the Powershot A630. Judging by online reviews it is looks like a good balance between features, quality and price.
Does anyone have any opinions or recommendations?
By the way, the best review site I have come across is dpreview.com for anyone else on the prowl for a camera.

You can get the Powershot camera over here for about £180
You would probably get it cheaper in Asia as long as you don’t go to the local bazaar!
